1914 World War One he was registered as being in Hawera, New Zealand.

  Emily Reader 

 Emily was born in Leeston and Baptised in Christchurch on the 9 th July 1854. Of all the children in the family, she was the closest to her parents. The rest of the family had ventured into the unknown up north to the Taranaki region.

Emily lived with her parents for most of her life and helped out in the Mechanics Institute which happened to be the bottom floor of the building.

On the 31st of January 1879 Emily married Thomas George Wright at Saint Peters Church in Christchurch. Her father and Charles Wright were two of the three witnesses. The third was a Mr. E.Drewett .

Thomas was born in 1832 in England and was trained as a Compositor.  He joined the Royal Navy and served on the China Coast until he was transferred to Crimea . While away he met Florence Nightingale and and then served at the fall of Sebastopol.

Once arriving at Canterbury he joined the Lyttelton Times as a compositor where he was transferred to Dunedin . Thomas only stayed there for a very short time before returning to Christchurch .

He worked there for 40 years as a proof reader. Emily and Thomas both loved horticulture and had a great collection of ferns and rare plants,.

Thomas and Emily had five children four girls and one boy.Emily died on the 13th of May 1913.

Mary Ada       Born : 16-12-1881 and Baptised :26-02-1882 St Peters Riccarton  

Occupation : Dress maker and Married : William John Wellington 1902  Resided : Simeon Street Spreydon and Raced Greyhounds. Died 1950,  Will filed 30/08/1950
