Reader's Book

 Tom Henry

 Tom Henry was born on the 22nd of July 1894 at Alexandra Street in Palmerston, North New Zealand.

He worked at a bank in Wellington as a clerk until he was drafted to join the first world war where he was posted to Gallipolli.

On the 13 of April 1918 he married Kathlene in England and returned to New Zealand where they had their first child Lydia Ione. Lydia died as a young child from Tuberculosis.

Kathlene died from the Spanish Flu brought back from the war by the returning soldiers. She died on the 9th December 1924 and was buried in Bulls.

When Tom returned from the war he learnt the trade of a builder. He got remarried to Dorothy Keen on the 19th April 1930 in Hawera

While in Hawera he worked for Arthur Brown Construction Ltd who helped to build ninety five percent of the Southern Taranaki Dairy Company. Tom was also a fine Horticulturist and became a park ranger for the National Parks. Tom carried on with his love of plants till he retired.

Dorothy and Tom had three children which were all boys; They were John Patrick, David Arthur and Thomas Joseph.

Tom and the boys loved band music and became the president of the Hawera Municipal Band.

He passed away on a Friday night at 9.00 o'clock on the 9th of June 1972 with Infesemiaat Waihi Road in Hawera. His ashes were scattered across the South Taranaki region by Plane.
